Guide to Writing a Research Paper

Guide to Writing a Research PaperFor someone who is about to enter the field of psychology, the Joseph G.L. La Jolla Handbook for Writers of Research Papers is a great resource. It provides a detailed instruction that will enable a writer to gain more efficiency from the research papers in his or her handbook. The author of the Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, Joseph G.L. La Jolla, a professor of psychology at the California State University, Los Angeles, makes use of this workbook in writing a research paper. The Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, unlike most workbooks in this field, does not just tell a writer what he or she should write, but what not to write. Most research papers tend to focus on developing an idea for a paper; sometimes they are not really focused. This particular workbook will help a writer become aware of certain pitfalls and of ways to avoid them.Of course, this workbook also makes suggestions about how to write a better paper. La Jolla says that the most important tip he can give is to be clear and specific. Some papers end up being less than accurate, making them a waste of time. By using these steps, a writer can avoid those mistakes and make sure the paper is worth publishing. The Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, while it may be full of instructions, it is not a grammar book, as Joseph G.L. La Jolla does not see it as such.Despite its wordiness, the Handbook for Writers of Research Papers contains many helpful ideas ongrammar. For example, La Jolla tells a writer to always write something that is grammatically correct.Another part of the Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, besides giving more information, is that the authors of the workbook also offer insight into editing papers. They also show the writer how to structure a paper. The authors of the workbook also bring in some interesting ideas about the first drafts of papers. Thus, the Handbook for Writers of Research Papers serves a purpose beyond merely te lling a writer what to write.

The Perfect Bacteria for Growing Humans free essay sample

Hey, watch where you are going a classmate instructed me after I had absentmindedly run into him in the hallway. Embarrassed, I whispered Im really sorry a few seconds before I run into another student. After I ensured that I was far enough from the stream of students that I could not impose harm on anyone else, I listened to my voicemail again Hi I am returning a message about working on a research project at one of the University’s labs. Could we meet at 4pm? A novice in the field of scientific research, my aspirations were not quite correlated with my skill level. I dreamed that I alone could find the cause behind Alzheimers or if I allowed myself to truly indulge in my fantasy world I aspired to genetically engineer mosquitoes to be neon so I could more easily see them to kill them (a long-standing dream of mine). We will write a custom essay sample on The Perfect Bacteria for Growing Humans or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page While these aspirations lived on in my heart, I had to start from the bottom to gain skills. Thus, I began doing some internet research on some more fundamental, basic experiments and ended up studying how bacteria affect the development of plants. While my conclusion was not quite as revolutionary as neon mosquitoes, it was still extremely interesting to me because it gave me insight into the wild world of bacteriology. Cocci, spirochete, bacillus, diplococci, gram positive, gram negative these were all words I had never heard before and now I knew how each one affected the growth of different plants. Plants could largely be compared and defined by the kinds of nutrients and bacteria that would allow them to flourish. The specific temperature, soil type, and bacteria that would make delicious lentils is different from the combination of atmospheric conditions that would bring out desirable qualities in beans. Each plant needs a different set of nutrients, for example, that just a specific kind of bacteria can provide. Thus, plants are vastly different entities, requiring different forms of nourishment from their environment to thrive. While humans are a couple of evolutionary steps away from plants, they too require a distinct combination of nutrients and should never be compared as each individual is intellectually fulfilled by unique topics and ideas. For example, an equipped lab, a knowledgeable professor and a biology textbook served as the perfect nutrients for me to ignite my drive to learn, quicken my heart beat and consequently cause me to crash into several of my classmates. Science has allowed me to grow as a student and a person by nurturing my intellectual curiosity and exposing me to a different way of viewing the world. All that separates the different species of plants is a DNA sequence, an extremely small fraction of all the bases of DNA. The beauty of science lies in the small details: a microlitter more or less of an ingredient in a protocol can have a huge difference in the end result. While it is perhaps minimalistic to compare differing humans to lentils and beans, all that separates every one of us on this earth are sequences of DNA. These microscopic details have forged us into unique individuals with unique interests. Given a very specific combination (different for each individual) of intellectual and material nutrients everyone can achieve optimal growth. This combination of nutrients comes from choosing the right environment—the right city to live in, the right friends to surround yourself with, and even the right school to go to. Lentils and beans, like people, are vastly different in a variety of aspects; however, it is these differences that truly make life worth living, these differences are the reason why I am eager to continue to explore the world and the people living in it. It is those differences that drive me to desire to continue my education at a University where the combination of unique resources and self-driven people with different intellectual interests will provide the perfect nutrients and bacteria for me to achieve optimal growth.

World Regional Geography North America

World Regional Geography North America Map comparisons The Canadian population is adhered to the South owing to numerous reasons that trace back to the ancient migration patterns, industrial revolution, climatic conditions, and urbanization. As highlighted in the introductory statement, the spatial population pattern of Canada is skewed towards the South Eastern region partly because of early migration pattern.Advertising We will write a custom assessment sample on World Regional Geography: North America specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This region represents the first habitat of European immigrants (1942) who owe their reasons for the mass exodus to several push and pull factors that include fertile land and favorable climate among others. As such, with enough human resource and technical know-how the region evolved along two fronts simultaneously; becoming industrialized and urbanized. To this effect, the then cities within this place were well served with communication networks inform of railways and roads, and teeming with activities consequently burgeoning and hence attracted more and more people as opposed to other regions of Canada (Schaefer 302). Moreover, the harsh climatic conditions of the North (humid and cold climate with short cool summers) are the reasons why the South dwarfs the North in population density. The spatial population distribution of North America is related to the physiographic pattern of the region to a greater extend. On comparing the maps in figures 3-2 and 3-19 a correlation between the two can be drawn. On observing the land terrain along latitude 400 as portrayed in figure 3-2 it is apparent that majority of the population reside at the lowlands below 2500 meters, and a few along the sea shores. With a wide area of land on the West characterized by high altitudes then it follows that it exhibits sparse population. Thus, a majority of the population is biased towards the East. The population is avoiding highlands in favor of plain lowlands. From the dispersal patterns as exhibited by figure 3-7 it is apparent that from the 19th to 20th century the population has been moving towards high atitude regions from the sea shores. This is evident by the increase in population in most Central States of Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma among others. The population moves from the Eastern States and coastal States of New Jersey and Delaware among others.Advertising Looking for assessment on geography? Let's see if we can help you! On comparison to figure 3-14 of fossil fuel deposits it is evident that the two are correlated. The major manufacturing belts fall within the major fossil fuel reserves vital in running these industries at reduced running costs. Moreover, the belt falls within regions rich in industrial raw materials i.e. the corn and cotton belts among others. To boost its growth the region is served with international harbors that are open to Europe and the rest of the World. Moreover, the large population provides a ready market to already finished products (MacLeod 690). Figure 3-14 represents the major fossil energy reserves of North America. There are three major fossil energy reserves with coal and gas taking a lions share relative to oil. The major States that produce coal include: Montana, North Dakota, Wyoming, Idaho and Utah. On the other hand, the major states producing coal include: Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Louisiana, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Mississippi and Michigan. Finally, the major states with oil reserves are Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Michigan (Kimble 602). The History of Steam Engines

The History of Steam Engines Before the invention of the gasoline-powered engine, mechanical transportation was fueled by steam. In fact, the concept of a steam engine pre-dates modern engines by a couple thousand years as mathametician and engineer Heron of Alexandria, who lived in Roman Egypt during the first century, was the first to describe a rudimentary version he named the Aeolipile.   Along the way, a number of leading scientists who toyed with the idea of using the force generated by heating water to power a machine of some sort. One of them was none other than Leonardo Da Vinci who drew up designs for a steam powered cannon called the Architonnerre sometime during the 15th century. A basic steam turbine was also detailed in papers written by the Egyptian astronomer, philosopher and engineer  Taqi ad-Din  in 1551.  Ã‚  Ã‚   However, the real groundwork for the development of a  practical, working motor didnt come about until the mid-1600s. It was during this century that several inventors were able to develop and test water pumps as well as piston systems that would pave the way for the commercial steam engine. From that point, the commercial steam engine was then made possible by the efforts of three important figures. Thomas Savery (1650-1715) Thomas Savery was an English military engineer and inventor. In 1698, he patented the first crude  steam engine  based on Denis Papins Digester or pressure cooker of 1679. Savery had been working on solving the problem of pumping water out of coal mines when he came up with an idea for an engine powered by steam. His machine consisted of a closed vessel filled with water in which steam under pressure was introduced. This forced the water upwards and out of the mine shaft. A cold water sprinkler was then used to condense the steam. This created a vacuum which sucked more water out of the mine shaft through a bottom valve. Thomas Savery later worked with Thomas Newcomen on the atmospheric steam engine. Among Saverys other inventions was an  odometer  for ships, a device that measured distance traveled. To learn more about Thomas Savery the inventor, check out his biography.  Ive also written a description of Savery’s crude steam engine.   Thomas Newcomen (1663-1729) Thomas Newcomen was an English blacksmith who invented the atmospheric steam engine. The invention was an improvement over Thomas Slaverys previous design. The Newcomen steam engine used the force of atmospheric pressure to do the work. This process begins with the engine pumping steam into a cylinder. The steam was then condensed by cold water, which created a vacuum on the inside of the cylinder. The resulting atmospheric pressure operated a piston, creating downward strokes. With Newcomens enginee, the intensity of pressure was not limited by the pressure of the steam, a departure from what Thomas Savery had patented in 1698. In 1712, Thomas Newcomen, together with John Calley, built their first engine on top of a water filled mine shaft and used it to pump water out of the mine. The Newcomen engine was the predecessor to the Watt engine and it was one of the most interesting pieces of technology developed during the 1700s. To learn more about Thomas Newcomen and his steam engine, check out this biography. Photos and a diagram of Newcomen’s steam engine can be found at Niagara college’s professor Mark Csele’s website. James Watt (1736-1819) Born in Greenock, James Watt was a Scottish inventor and mechanical engineer who was renowned for the improvements he made to the steam engine. While working for the University of Glasgow in 1765, Watt was assigned the task of repairing a Newcomen engine that was deemed inefficient but the best steam engine of its time. That started the inventor working on several improvements to Newcomens design. The most notable improvement was Watts 1769 patent for a separate condenser connected to a cylinder by a valve. Unlike Newcomens engine, Watts design had a condenser that could be cool while the cylinder was hot. Eventually Watts engine would become the  dominant design  for all modern steam engines and helped bring about the  industrial revolution. A unit of power called the Watt was named after James Watt. the Watt symbol is W, and it is equal to 1/746 of a horsepower, or one volt times one amp.

A Person who Had a Significant Influence on You Essay

A Person who Had a Significant Influence on You - Essay Example It is much harder for outsiders to make their mark in an established market, and so I admire him particularly for achieving this, and for making it possible for others to follow in his footsteps. Sebastian Kaindl has always believed in my ability, and I have been working with him very seriously since 2009. At first I noticed mainly that he knew all about the various skills and techniques that a professional footballer needs to work on. I valued him for his knowledge, and I followed his instructions very closely. He invented a special training system to build explosive, fast and strong athletes, and I was extremely keen to follow this career path, and so I concentrated on the detail of the footwork, on building up speed, and understanding the difficult arts of changing direction and sprinting mechanics. These are subjects which I had found quite boring in school, but when they are understood in the context of football it becomes very clear why we need to know about them. Sebastian Kai ndl has a great enthusiasm about the knowledge that lies behind the game, and this enthusiasm is evident in all the classes that he takes. For someone who is so successful, he is also quite a modest guy. He told me that other people have done excellent work in designing training methods in the past, and that we should never give up learning how to improve what we do. He incorporated some of Louie Simmon’s techniques, for example, because thought that this was the best approach for strength techniques. I noticed also that Sebastian Kaindl takes notice of the individual needs and situation of each athlete. In the past I have taken part in training squads where one set of exercises was designed for the whole group, and no variation was allowed. This might be good for creating team spirit but it is not the best way to achieve individual excellence. Thanks to Sebastian Kaindl I have learned to believe in myself, and to push always for a training regime that is ideally suited for m y needs. The mix of exercises that I have been doing with him ranges from Boxsquatting with bands, to Olympic lifts, medicine ball work and a wide variety of different jumps. I don’t know where he learned all these different techniques, but he certainly knows how to pick them and build them into a tailor-made regime for each person. When I was younger I used to think that being good at football was all about technique and fitness. Thanks to Sebastian Kaindl’s training and personal example I have learned that there is a lot more to it than that. Some of the things that make the difference between a good player and a great player are more to do with how a person thinks. One of the first lessons I learned from him was that discipline has to come from inside yourself, and that developing self-discipline leads on to reliability, dedication continuity and all the qualities that football managers and leaders look for in their players. I have seen so many examples of exception ally talented players who have ruined their chances through lack of discipline for example in terms of sticking to the prescribed diet or attending all of the sessions. I used to watch him as he prepared for a session and it was clear that he came with his mind already fully focused on the task ahead. He was not late for appointments and he treated people with
